Abstract:

Understanding and synthesizing 3D layouts and objects with affordances still remains a challenge in computer graphics and vision. Solving such problems will enable new applications in creating highly immersive virtual environments, as well as "functional" 3D objects that can be 3D-printed and readily used. In this talk, I will discuss the recent progress of my group in solving such problems, including automatic generation of virtual environments with ergonomics considerations, and the computational design of interchangeable components for hands-on assembly-based modeling (such as for designing max-and-match toys). I will conclude the talk by discussing some interesting problems along these directions that could serve as good avenues for future work.

 

 

Bio:

 

Lap-Fai (Craig) Yu is an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He obtained his PhD degree in Computer Science from UCLA in 2013, where he received the Outstanding Recognition in Research in Computer Science. He is the recipient of the Cisco Outstanding Graduate Research Award, the Award of Excellence from Microsoft Research, the UCLA Dissertation Year Fellowship and the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship. His research has been published in top graphics and vision venues, including SIGGRAPH, SIGGRRAPH Asia, ICCV and CVPR; was awarded the Best Paper Honorable Mention in 3DV 2016; and has been featured in New Scientist, the UCLA Headlines, the UCLA Mathematics Newsletter and newspapers internationally.
